# Tools

> Search pack styles and packaging references, then fetch full studies and exports.

Packinspo MCP gives your agent two research layers:

1. **Pack styles**: a brand's packaging system, ready to export as PACK.md, tokens or CSS.
2. **Packaging references**: one curated pack per brand, each with a full study and credited photos.

For visual direction, start with styles. For concrete decisions about format, closure or label layout, read references. All tools are read-only.

## `list_taxonomy`

Lists the industries, categories, pack formats and confirmed materials used as filters. Call it first when unsure which keys exist.

**Parameters**: none.

## `search_styles`

Searches the pack styles by look, brand, category or format.

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `query` | string | no | Words describing the look or brand. Max 200 characters. |
| `industry` | enum | no | Industry key from `list_taxonomy`, such as `beauty` or `food`. |
| `category` | enum | no | Category key, such as `skincare`, `perfume` or `soft-drinks`. |
| `format` | enum | no | Pack format key, such as `bottle`, `jar`, `tube`, `pump` or `can`. |
| `limit` | number | no | 1 to 25. Default `10`. |

**Good queries**

- `apothecary amber glass`
- `bold playful snack`
- `Aesop`
- `minimal monochrome fragrance`

Each result gives the style slug, mood, category, formats, tags, the first palette colours and the Packinspo page URL.

## `get_style`

Returns one pack style in the format you ask for.

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `slug` | string | yes | Style slug from `search_styles`, which is the brand slug, such as `aesop`. |
| `format` | enum | no | `pack_md` (extended, default), `pack_md_compact`, `tokens` (DTCG JSON), `css` (CSS variables) or `tailwind` (Tailwind v4 theme). |

Use `pack_md_compact` inside a prompt and `pack_md` when you need the full system. Typefaces are lookalikes unless sourced; colours are sampled from photographs.

## `search_packs`

Searches the curated references.

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `query` | string | no | Words about the product or design. Max 200 characters. |
| `industry` | enum | no | Industry key. |
| `category` | enum | no | Category key. |
| `format` | enum | no | Pack format key. |
| `material` | enum | no | Confirmed material key: `glass`, `plastic` or `aluminium`. |
| `colour` | string | no | Colour family, such as `Green`, `Black`, `Pink` or `Beige`. |
| `limit` | number | no | 1 to 25. Default `10`. |

**Good queries**

- `hot sauce bold type`
- `refillable`
- `olive oil`
- `Graza`

Each result gives the pack slug, a one-paragraph summary, category, format, material (marked unverified when not confirmed), style tags, the cover image URL and the page URL.

## `get_pack`

Returns the full study of one reference.

| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| `slug` | string | yes | Pack slug from `search_packs`. |

The study covers product context, construction and use, design analysis, takeaways, sources, up to six photo URLs and the photography credit.

## Errors

Unknown slugs return a short message telling the agent which search tool to use. Invalid filter keys return a validation error listing the accepted values.
